Our towel bear.
Caymans
Waiting to get off the boat and go exploring
If you bought an excursion (which may be a little more expense than finding it yourself, but worth it. You don't have to think about rides or anything) we usually met in Follies, and go out in our group and follow signs. :)
This is sitting on the tender boat looking down between the ship and little boat. SOOOOO pretty.
So the Grand Cayman. We did an excursion where we boated out to Stingray city on a catamaran, and then sailed back. Sting ray city is a sand bar out by the deep sea. You take a couple big steps from the sand bar and then it drops to the deep sea, thousands of feet. It is here on the sand bar stingrays come to play.
The story goes as follows: about 80 years ago, the deep sea fisherman use to sit here and fish off the edge of the sand bar. of course they gutted the fish and that went into the water. The stingrays originally came to eat, but continued to hang around and now they come during the day and play with you.
The stingrays are very friendly, since they come to you and are not in their home so they have no need to be defensive. Stingrays live about 50 years and only have ONE stinger for that whole life span. They have very distinctive markings on their backs. The crew who took us on the trip have been out there so much they have specific stingrays that come to them and know them. kissing a female stingray is 7 years good luck, 14 years for a male. The females are the social ones that come. The ones we saw reached up to 5' across their wings! It was so cool. We did get to see a male. they stay pretty small, a couple feet across.
It was awesome, you walk into the water and the stingrays come to you. They rub against your legs, swim to you to get pets and loving. We got to hold and kiss them. I got a stingray sandbar massage. :) aka a stingray flapping it's wing on my back. we also fed them squid. It was so cool, they do not have teeth so they suck like a vacuum... they have pretty good suction too.
The dark shadows are stingrays.
The catamaran we were on!!! We decided we want one...... and could retire there easy.....(well enjoying it, not money wise, SO expensive)
